Valuing gold from GDR times correctly
East German households often have jewellery that was bought before 1990. It is frequently made of 333 gold (8 carat) or 585 gold (14 carat). The hallmark is usually on the inside of a ring or on the clasp of a chain.
Important: 333 gold contains only one third fine gold. A ring that feels heavy is therefore sometimes worth less than expected – a light 585 ring can fetch more.
Inheritance: sort first, then sell
- Sort by hallmark: keep 333, 585, 750 and unmarked pieces separate.
- Weigh separately: each group has a different price per gram.
- With stones? Stones are usually deducted or not paid for when selling scrap gold.
- Calculate the value with the gold calculator.
Leipzig as a trading city
Leipzig has been a trade fair and trading city for centuries – and today, too, there are numerous gold buyers and jewellers in the city centre and the districts. Have your jewellery tested and weighed in front of you, and get at least two offers.
Pieces without a hallmark are not worthless: a reputable buyer will test the fineness with an acid test or X-ray fluorescence.
