Berlin's gold market: more diverse than anywhere else

With around 3.7 million inhabitants, Berlin is Germany's largest gold market – and its most colourful. Alongside traditional jewellers in City West and Mitte, the scene is shaped above all by the gold shops around Sonnenallee, Karl-Marx-Straße and Kottbusser Tor. They mainly trade 22-carat gold (916): bangles, chains and coins such as Çeyrek or Ziynet, which are given as gifts at weddings.

For sellers, this means: if you have 22-carat jewellery, offer it where it is actually traded. Dealers who resell such jewellery themselves often pay more than a buyer who only pays for melt value.

What Berlin households sell most often

  • 585 jewellery (14 carat) – the German standard, e.g. wedding rings and chains.
  • 333 gold – common in older jewellery, especially from GDR times in the east of the city.
  • Bullion coins and small bars – often from inheritances.

Staatliche Münze Berlin

Berlin has its own mint: the Staatliche Münze Berlin (Berlin State Mint) strikes euro circulation coins and collector coins with the mint mark A. Some of Germany's gold commemorative coins (such as the €100 gold coins) also come from Berlin – but when you sell, what usually counts is the gold content, not the issue price.

Our tip for Berlin

There are many places that buy gold, and their prices vary widely too. Before you go, use the gold calculator to work out the pure material value. A fair offer for scrap gold is usually 85–95% of that; anything well below is a reason to walk on.

Questions about gold in Berlin

Where is the best place to sell 22-carat gold in Berlin?
Where it is also traded: many gold shops in Neukölln and Kreuzberg buy 22-carat jewellery because they can resell it. Still, compare at least two offers against the material value from our calculator.
Is GDR jewellery in Berlin worth anything?
Yes, according to its gold content. A lot of jewellery from GDR times is 333 or 585 gold. The hallmark shows the fineness; the value is weight times fineness times the daily rate.
Does a pawnshop in Berlin pay the full value of gold?
No. A pawnshop only lends against part of the gold's value because it has to cover its risk. If you want to sell rather than pawn, a gold buyer will usually pay considerably more.
