Frankfurt and Germany's gold

After the USA, Germany holds the world's second-largest state gold reserves – around 3,350 tonnes. About half of it is stored in the vaults of the Deutsche Bundesbank in Frankfurt, the rest mainly in New York and London. For the gold price you get as a private person, this makes no difference: what counts is the world market price in US dollars, converted into euros.

Physical gold or gold on the stock exchange?

Frankfurt is home to Deutsche Börse, which also handles exchange-traded gold products. The difference from physical gold:

  • Bars and coins are something you hold in your own hands. Bought without VAT, tax-free to sell after one year – but with a premium when you buy.
  • Exchange-traded products are cheap to trade and easy to sell, but you don't own any gold in your drawer.

Selling gold in Frankfurt

Many people in Frankfurt sell not only scrap gold but also bullion coins and 999 bars. For common products, the spread between buying and selling is small – ask specifically for the buying price per gram or per ounce and compare it with the spot price above.

For jewellery, calculate the material value with the gold calculator. A reputable dealer will explain how much they deduct from the spot price.
