Frequently asked questions about the gold price

How is the gold price determined?
It is based on the spot price on the international gold market in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 g). We continuously convert it into euros at the current exchange rate and update the prices every minute.
What is 1 gram of gold worth today?
One gram of fine gold (999) is the price per ounce divided by 31.1035. For jewellery gold, only the gold content counts: 585 gold (14 carat) contains 58.5% and 750 gold (18 carat) 75% fine gold. The current values are shown in the “Gold price by purity” table.
What is the difference between the spot price and the buy-back price?
The spot price is the market price for gold traded for immediate delivery. Dealers usually buy gold slightly below it and sell bars and coins at a premium above it. The difference covers minting, logistics and margin.
When is gold traded?
Gold is traded almost around the clock – from Sunday evening to Friday evening (CET) on exchanges and over the counter in Asia, Europe and the US. At weekends the price stays largely unchanged.
Is gold tax-free in Germany?
For private investors, gains on physical gold are tax-free after a holding period of more than one year. Investment gold (bars and certain coins) is also exempt from VAT. For your individual situation, a tax adviser can help.
Can expats and foreigners living in Germany buy and sell gold tax-free?
Yes. German tax rules depend on tax residence, not nationality: if you live in Germany and sell physical gold after holding it for more than one year, the gain is tax-free, and investment gold is VAT-free for everyone. If your home country also taxes you, for example because of your citizenship, its rules may apply as well.
What ID do I need to buy or sell gold in Germany?
For cash transactions of 2,000 euros or more, dealers must identify you under the Money Laundering Act (Geldwäschegesetz) – usually with a passport or EU identity card. Many dealers also ask for ID on smaller sales, and for bank transfers each dealer's own rules apply.
What is the difference between 14k, 18k and 22k gold?
Carat shows the share of pure gold out of 24 parts: 14 carat (hallmark 585) contains 58.5%, 18 carat (750) 75% and 22 carat (916) 91.6% fine gold. Higher-carat gold is worth more per gram but is softer. In Germany 585 is the most common standard for jewellery, while 22 carat is typical of jewellery from India and the Gulf states.
