How the prices on goldpreis-live.de are calculated – transparent and easy to follow.

Current prices

Our prices are based on the international spot price for gold, silver, platinum and palladium per troy ounce (31.1034768 g). We obtain it via the gold-api.com interface in US dollars, euros and Swiss francs and query it every minute. The page updates automatically in your browser.

The spot price is a market price for the immediate trading of large quantities. It is neither a buying nor a selling offer. Dealers sell bars and coins at a premium above it and usually buy them back slightly below it.

Trading hours

Precious metals trade almost around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday evening (German time usually from 23:00/midnight on Sunday to 22:00/23:00 on Friday, depending on US daylight saving time), with a short daily break. Outside these hours we show the last price with the note “Market closed”.

Daily change

The change refers to the closing price of the previous trading day (last price before midnight, German time). At weekends we compare Friday's last price with Thursday's close.

Grams, kilograms and fineness

  • 1 gram = price per ounce ÷ 31.1034768
  • 1 kilogram = price per gram × 1,000
  • Alloys: price per gram × fineness, e.g. 585 gold (14 carat) = fine gold price per gram × 0.585
  • Bars and coins: fine gold weight × fine gold price per gram (melt value)

Historical prices

  • From 2015 (palladium from 2017): daily figures from gold-api.com. For days before this website launched, this is the highest price of the day.
  • 1999 to 2014 (gold only): monthly World Bank figures, compiled by freegoldapi.com.
  • Conversion to euro: daily reference rates of the European Central Bank.
  • Since launch we have recorded our own prices every minute and use them to calculate the daily open, high, low and close.

Typical premiums and buy-back prices

The ranges shown for premiums (buying) and buy-back prices (selling to a dealer) are typical values for common products and are for guidance only. Actual prices depend on the dealer, the quantity and the condition.
